There is this subtle lie, This Is Just Who I Am, that the enemy likes to convince our flesh, that how you respond and treat others is just who you are and you can’t change it. It’s kind of this rebellion spirit. How you speak and act does matter. Nothing is off the table for change when it comes to the Kingdom. Our hearts move into becoming more like His. There is truth to it being who you are but it’s not an excuse. You are never too far gone.
Questions and answers from today’s show This Is Just Who I Am:
1. Why is this lie important to you to bring truth to? (This is how you will share your story.)
I used to say so often, I wish my story wasn’t what it is. I’m sure many of us feel that way – but I’ve finally gotten to the place where I can say I know God didn’t want me to do all the things I did but He’s redeemed it, restored me, and shown me what a life in Christ looks like – wholeness in Him and not who we are.
I was very rebellious in my teen years and didn’t accept Christ until I was 20. Even once giving my life to Christ there were things about me I just thought it’s who I was. I didn’t believe there was a way to change certain things because I was who I was.
This was a lie straight from the pit of hell and by God’s grace in my 22nd year of life He brought me to 1 Cor. 10:13 which shattered this lie and I pray it shatters the lie for anyone who hears this episode!
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
1 Cor. 10:13
YOU CAN CHANGE, your life doesn’t have to stay in the same shame-filled, sin-ridden habits, not because of what you can do for yourself but because of what God can do and He promises a way of escape! This escape for me was – Christian counseling, soul tie healing prayer, deliverance ministry, and learning how to put up sexual boundaries.
I no longer had to live under this looming heaviness of belief I couldn’t change or I’ve already lived this way or done these things so it doesn’t matter. IT ALL MATTERS.
Every time we choose God’s best for us we choose to walk in His light.
2. We often use the phrase, “This is just who I am.” How can we honor who we are in Christ and the fun things about us yet still honor changes and the call to holiness?
Being open to convictions. If we’re living aligned with God’s word – I think of Galatians 5:25 – if we live by the spirit, stay in step with the spirit.
Is it sin or does is lead me to sin? These are the two questions I have to ask myself.
Since convictions vary from person to person I think this is the best way to address is.
Is it sin or does it lead me to sin — AND — is it wise or unwise.
3. What’s the truth to this lie? (If we kind of address it in the beginning organically, I’ll probably then ask you what it looks like to live out practically. If you have a few examples that would be great.)
Certain sins from my past literally died in the healing ministries I went through. I’ve never thought of them again. But, others still come up and I have to remind myself of God’s promise – where’s the way of escape. And most times these days …it’s time with Him. When I don’t spend time with Him, that’s when some of these rear their ugly head.
Living in the past – what if’s and what could’ve been.
4. What hinders us from living in the truth or practically?
It’s hard. It’s hard to walk away from sin. It feels weird to say that because when I look at some people’s sin I think how can’t they walkway from that!!! But, then I look at my own and go…wow, why can’t you walk away from that Chelsey!
Living in the promise of God’s way of escape means choosing to lay the sin aside.
Then to walk confidently in the truth that God will hold my hand through this.
I think of Paul here saying – O wretched man that I am, who can save me from this sin. Romans 7:24 We’re the same as Paul..we need to be saved from sin and there is only ONE way to do that. Die to self as we live tethered to Christ.
5. What lie have you been believing lately in your personal life? And what truth are you standing on? (Doesn’t have to relate to this lie in particular.)
Ugh. I truly love that you ask this! James 5 tells us to confess where we are so that others will pray alongside us as we journey out what God is doing.
I had to big heart check that God doesn’t want to just reveal His glory through me. He wants to use ALL people. I need to celebrate my friends who God is using on behalf of His kingdom.
Truth: Psalm 115: Not to us, LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.
It’s always about God and His glory – NOT US and our name!
